In 2013, a group of 4 young visionaries set out to change the sustainability scene in Malaysia through progressive ideas, changing how people look at waste and sustainability issues.
What started as a disruptive group of passionate volunteers expanded into a team of permanent staff members from diverse nationalities and backgrounds.

Milestones
Award
Entrepreneurs for Good Award (British Council – Arthur Guinness Fund)
We harnessed the power of art to inspire the public toward a sustainable way of living. Utilising discarded and reused materials, we built art installations that now stood bold in urban spaces as a powerful message on how sustainability can be incorporated into our lives.
Urbanscapes 2014
Here we got the chance to build our own (green) festival within a festival! Urbanscapes hold fond memories in our hearts for being one of the first to give Biji-biji the freedom to let our experimental impulses run wild. Our early inventions include the Interactive Water Tower made in conjunction with World Water Day as well as the Steampunk Stage and Nasi Lemak Stagewrap.
Award
Tan Sri Liew Kee Sin Entrepreneurship Award – Champion (Alliance Bank SME Challenge)
Our greening efforts began in 2015 with placing recycling bins around the festival site and educating attendees about sustainable waste management. Years later, we have become one of the festival’s main partners alongside the Sarawak Tourism Board in its commendable efforts to become a progressively green and eco-conscious festival in Malaysia.
We showcased the Beyond Bins machine for the first time. Aside from curbing plastic pollution, this machine highlighted how we can use creative innovation to find small scale solutions for big world problems.
Biji-biji invested RM 250,000 into funding Mereka. In 2018, Mereka raised RM 1.6 million from its successful equity crowdfunding (ECF) campaign to set up its makerspace and platform.
