The concept of sustainability is gaining traction in Malaysia. Sustainability when explained in theories is not a very easy concept to comprehend. The nature of sustainability which calls for holistic approach makes it an intricate idea. However, when the theory of sustainability is broken down, it enables everyone to contribute to the cause. It has many easy access and entry points for anyone that would like to give a try. Gamuda Berhad is one such, taking a chance on placemaking.
Placemaking, is a multi-faceted approach to the planning, design and management of public spaces. Placemaking capitalizes on a local community's assets, inspiration, and potential, with the intention of creating public spaces that promote people's health, happiness, and well being. Hence, we conducted a Bicara session on Sustainable Placemaking for the employees of Gamuda. The aim of the session is to provide understanding what is sustainability, how to incorporate sustainability in their day-to-day work, what is placemaking, what are the thought processes to be involved in a placemaking process, how project planning and sustainability is intertwined, how sustainability and placemaking is intertwined etc.
This session saw 15 participants from various Gamuda departments. As a large number of participants came from the department working on the MRT project, the discussion revolved a bit more around the MRT project and how it could be made more sustainable.
Prior to the Bicara session, a talk on social enterprise was given to the crowd. The talk introduced Biji-biji Initiative, it’s products and services, the principle we believe in and how sustainability is incorporated within the business.
